Insurance Coverage for Lift Chairs

Medicare will only cover the seat-lift mechanism, but not the actual chair itself. The reimbursment amount is roughly $300 depending on the state in which the beneficiary is located and if coverage criteria are met. Medicare has certain coverage criteria to qualify a patient medically for a Seat Lift Mechanism. A lift chair would be considered medically necessary if ALL of the following coverage criteria are met:

Patient must have severe arthritis of hip or knee, or have a severe neuromuscular disease
Seat lift mechanism must be part of physician’s course of treatment and be prescribed to effect improvement, or arrest or retard deterioration in thepatient’s condition
Patient must be completely incapable of standing up from a regular armchair
Once standing, the patient must have the ability to ambulate

Difficulty getting up from a chair is not sufficient justification for a seat lift mechanism.
