Education

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you have probably been asked by your healthcare provider to make many changes. One of the first requests your physician has probably made is for you to learn as much as you can about diabetes. The Diabetes Institute education center provides diabetes education in a variety of formatted classes. They include:

  • Four 2 hour classes, offered at various scheduled times during the day
  • Two 3 ½ hour classes, offered during mornings, afternoons, evenings and select Saturdays
  • One on One sessions for those with language barriers or specific identified needs and approved by their insurance provider

Classes meet the requirements of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and include these areas:

  • The diabetes disease process and treatment options
  • Incorporating appropriate nutritional management
  • Incorporating physical activity into lifestyle
  • Utilizing medications for therapeutic effectiveness
  • Monitoring blood glucose, urine ketones (when appropriate) and using the results to improve glucose control
  • Preventing, detecting and treating acute complications
  • Preventing (through Risk Reduction behavior), detecting, and treating chronic complications
  • Goal setting to promote health and problem solving for daily living
  • Integrating psychosocial adjustment to daily life

Education about your glucose monitor is also very important. How to use your monitor correctly, get the right amount of a drop of blood and how to maintain your monitor are all very important in the continued management and control of your diabetes. Personal training on your new monitor is also offered as a service of the Diabetes Institute, to assure that you are comfortable with the process of using your monitor.
