What is a
Certified Diabetes Educator? Certified diabetes educators are health professionals who teach people with diabetes. To be Certified, the professional (which could be a registered nurse, pharmacist, physician, physician assistant, podiatrist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, or dietitian), must meet strict requirements. After meeting education requirements and before applying for the certification examination, the applicant must have a minimum of two years experience in diabetes patient and self-management education and must have worked a minimum of 1000 hours in diabetes patient and self-management education. An exam, which is taken every 5 years or attendance and completion of 75 hours of diabetes specific education, assures the class participant that the professional providing their education is knowledgeable and versed in diabetes.

The Diabetes Product Specialists of the Great Lakes Diabetes Institute are experienced in the area of equipment and technology relating to diabetes. They work closely with you to assure the appropriate product selection to suit your lifestyle. They are familiar with insurance coverage and will gladly respond to your questions and needs. Annual competencies assure you that they are familiar and knowledgeable with the equipment and insurance requirements.
