Pre-op visits are available to women prior to their pending mastectomy surgery. Visits prior to surgery can be very helpful for women who are concerned about their appearance following surgery and want to educate themselves on the many prosthetic options available to them. Choices do not have to be made at that time, but information will be given about the various products to help in the decision-making process.
Many products are available to help women feel more comfortable with their bodies following mastectomy surgery. This can begin in the hospital immediately following surgery. Women have the option of wearing a camisole or temporary breast form. These are soft undershirt style garments with soft breast forms. These can be worn until the surgical site is healed and a permanent breast form and bra can be worn. The temporary forms may or may not be covered by insurance.
After healing has occurred, other products available include:
Permanent breast forms and specialized bras are usually covered by Medicare, Medicaid, HMOs and other private insurances, but there may be some limitations.
Your surgeon will give you guidance for when you are able to be fitted with a more permanent breast form. If you attended a pre-op consultation session, you may already know the options available to you and you may have selected your preference. At the post-surgical fitting, you will again review the options, make your selection and be measured for the appropriate fit.
